Mapping ground surface deformation using temporarily coherent point SAR interferometry: Application to Los Angeles Basin

چکیده
a r t i c l e i n f o Multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is an effective tool to detect long-term seismotectonic motions by reducing the atmospheric artifacts, thereby providing more precise deformation signal. The commonly used approaches such as persistent scatterer InSAR (PSInSAR) and small baseline subset (SBAS) algorithms need to resolve the phase ambiguities in interferogram stacks either by searching a predefined solution space or by sparse phase unwrapping methods; however the efficiency and the success of phase unwrapping cannot be guaranteed. We present here an alternative approach – temporarily coherent point (TCP) InSAR (TCPInSAR) – to estimate the long term deformation rate without the need of phase unwrapping. The proposed approach has a series of innovations including TCP identification, TCP network and TCP least squares estimator. We apply the proposed method to the Los Angeles Basin in southern California where structurally active faults are believed capable of generating damaging earthquakes. The analysis is based on 55 interferograms from 32 ERS-1/2 images acquired during Oct. 1995 and Dec. 2000. To evaluate the performance of TCPInSAR on a small set of observations, a test with half of interferometric pairs is also performed. The retrieved TCPInSAR measurements have been validated by a comparison with GPS observations from Southern California Integrated GPS Network. Our result presents a similar deformation pattern as shown in past InSAR studies but with a smaller average standard deviation (4.6 mm) compared with GPS observations, indicating that TCPInSAR is a promising alternative for efficiently mapping ground deformation even from a relatively smaller set of interferograms. Deformation Mapping for Coal Mining using Time-series InSAR Combining Persistent Scatterers and Distributed Scatterers in Huainan City, China
Underground coal mining often causes persistent land subsidence, which would lead to huge threats to infrastructure and safety in the coal area [1, 2]. Traditional levelling and GPS methods are able to produce reliable measurement of ground subsidence [3]. However, these field surveys are time-consuming and cannot provide deformation map with high spatial sampling density. Synthetic aperture ra...

Abstract Earthquakes occur at teh border of teh plates and faults, causing financial and casual damages. Teh study of earthquakes and surface deformation is useful in understanding teh mechanism of earthquakes and managing teh risks and crises of earthquakes. A fault can be specified by its geometric source parameters. In Okada’s definition, these parameters are length, width, depth, strike, di...

[1] We combine Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR), tide gauge, and continuous GPS measurements to determine the spatial variation in vertical land motion (VLM) along the coast of the Los Angeles basin over the past decade, and to examine the impact of spatially variable VLM on relative sea level trends. By identifying radar scattering targets with long-term coherence we make height...
متن کاملSurface deformation associated with the 2008 Ms8.0 Wenchuan earthquake from ALOS L-band SAR interferometry
The Ms8.0 Wenchuan earthquake (in China) occurred on 12 May 2008 as a result of slip on the northeastern-striking Longmen Shan (LMS) faults beneath the ruggedmargin between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Sichuan Basin. The catastrophic event caused significant surface ruptures and permanent ground displacement in a wide area. This paper concentrates on mapping surface deformation caused by the m...

SAR interferometric data can be used for extracting three dimensional information of the earth’s surface by using the phase part of the radar signal. In this study, available SAR interferometric data acquired before and after the Marmara earthquake of 1999 and provided by ESA were used for mapping the ground deformation in the satellite line of sight (LOS) in the Izmit province. The interferome...
